How Sergei Shoigu went from Putin’s wilderness bestie to the scapegoat for Russia’s failures in Ukraine

Shoigu’s effective record and big public profile appeared to interest Putin.

In 1999, he chose Shoigu to be among the leaders of his celebration, United Russia, providing him the chance to develop a political base.

Thirteen years later on, in 2012, Putin promoted Shoigu briefly to be the guv of the Moscow area, and from there to run the defense ministry.

This offered Shoigu a function on the world phase and a main location in Russia’s clashes with the West.
