Warm Wood-and-Black Design in 51 Square Feet

This young couple with 3 kids was thrilled to purchase their very first villa, a 1970s home ignoring the Salish Sea on the coast of Washington state. While the views were gorgeous, the interiors required assistance. That consisted of the long and narrow, 51-square-foot main restroom, which had beige tones, carpet and laminate floor covering, an outdated wood vanity and an aging shower-tub combination.

Wishing to update the area, the couple worked with designer Jasmine Galle. Collaborating from another location, they chose to keep the design however change the shower-tub with a low-curb shower with a frameless glass panel that makes the compact area feel more open. Matte green-and-gray porcelain tiles encounter the flooring and up the back shower wall, pulling the eye in to highlight the space’s length instead of its width. White paint on one side wall improves the light, while black tiles on the other wall develop the look of depth. A midcentury-style double vanity nods to the home’s vintage, and a knotty cedar ceiling treatment includes heat.
